Facebook, Second Life, YouTube, Twittering, Blogging, Wiki, RSS feeds.........what role do these have in the workplace? Your workplace may currently be concerned about the risks associated with social media and block access to social media sites; however the ‘cyber charge’ is here. A generation of digital natives are entering the workplace, who are comfortable with virtual and web based communication. Social media tools are being increasingly recognised as a way to help employees and potential employees to actively participate and to share information. Applying these tools productively in the corporate/government environment will be a new challenge for Human Resource (HR) practitioners. Workshop Outcomes: This workshop is not a technical how-to-guide. It focuses on giving HR professionals a knowledge of what these tools have to offer, including the benefits and risks. The aim is to equip HR professionals so that they can contribute to the debate on whether their organisation should embrace social media type technology, and what planning, guidelines and change management is required for effective use. Some topics covered include: · shift in demographics and associated shift in use of web based media · definition of terms such as social media, web 2.0, Enterprise 2.0 · introduction to social media sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn, virtual world sites such as Second Life, and more common tools e.g. Wiki, RSS Feed, Twitter, Blogs, Flickr, and YouTube · examples of how these are being used for business, study and social engagement · risks and benefits for individual and organisational users of this media Target Audience: HR Professionals. This workshop is relevant to anyone interested in joining or communicating with the 'virtual' generation.
